For a class, I investigated mood lighting and the power of light to create emotional ambience. We were told to create our own lighting experience.
I wanted to experiment with silhouettes after learning about the way our visual system enhances edges. Our visual system is designed to enhance edges through a process called lateral inhibiton. Rather than taking the absolute value of a quantum of light, we focus on relative differences in brightness and color (which often occurs at edges) and adjust our visual perception through that mechanism.
In future iterations, I'd make the cityscape panels interchangeable so that each user could have a personalized lamp.
What I learned: How I could integrate cognitive neuroscience with design, cardboard prototyping, lasercutting
